EUOC District Event and SoSOL - Holyrood and Meadowfield Parks

Photograph (from ESOC website) looking from Holyrood Park towards yesterdays city race area and Edinburgh Castle.

I had entered the Brown (longest) course at this District/South of Scotland Orienteering League Event, but a sore calf and a cold, meant I changed to the next longest (Blue) course, which was 5.8k with 430m of climb and 17 controls.

EUOC - Edinburgh City Race

Edinburgh University Orienteering Club (EUOC)organised a city race in Edinburgh's Southside as part of their Big Weekend, which also includes a ceilidh and a District Event.

The City Race provided challenging courses with lots of route choices and took runners past a number of famous landmarks including the Scottish Parliament, Dynamic Earth and the Royal Mile. I ran the long course which was 6.9k with 29 controls.

FVO Night Event - Polmaise Wood

Tonights event attracted the usual FVO runners plus others from across Central Scotland, including a good contingent from Edinburgh University. Jon Cross had planned a really a testing 5.2k course with 24 controls, which included lots of short legs, changes of direction, butterfly loops and a long leg with several possible routes. Ross McLennan was fastest in ca 44 minutes, with Ali McLeod just behind.

STAG SoSOL - Drumpellier Country Park

This South of Scotland Orienteering League (SoSOL) event was organised by St Andrews Orienteeering Club, Glasgow (STAG) and took place at Drumpellier Country Park - an area of mature runnable woodland and open land, with a good network of paths and much nicer than I anticipated it would be! I ran the Brown course which made good use of the area and which was 9.5k with 90m of climb and 25 controls. The course gave close racing, with former World Championship runner and FVO team-mate, Steve Nicholson, winning in 58:14 and 4 other runners within 45 seconds.

INT Local Event - Tullochgribban

An injury to my calf in November has seriously curtailed my training and racing in the last few weeks. Fortunately, it now seems to be getting better and, after some easy running on paths over Christmas, I decided to test it out (somewhat cautiously!) in the terrain.

I entered the Interlopers Local Event at Tullochgribban - a new orienteering area in Speyside. I had intended running the Blue course (Course 1, except controls 10 - 15, and then Course 2), but my calf felt okay as I progressed round the course, so ended-up running the Brown course (Course 1, followed by Course 2) which was 8.6k with 27 controls and which took me 68:26. Ali McLeod of INVOC won in a very impressive 51 minutes.
