TAY Christmas Score Event - Kinnoull Hill

This years Tayside Orienteers Christmas Score Event took place at Kinnoull Hill, on the edge of Perth. Competitors on the long course had 60 minutes to get as many controls as they could, with each control having a points value. A late return resulted in penalty points being deducted. To complicate things further and, in keeping with the season, bonus points were available at selected controls. At the last control, competitors were given a second map (see below) and had to visit 6 controls in order before finishing. Missing or wrong controls resulted in penalty points being deducted. The event was followed by a Christmas lunch at the nearby Murrayshall House Hotel.

STAGlasgow's 13th 3 parks in 1 day - King's Park, Cathkin Braes Country Park and Queen's Park

This was STAGlasgow's 13th 3 parks in 1 day event! The location of the first park was only revealed at the end of last week, with the venue for the second race disclosed after the first event and the venue for the final race, revealed after the second event. To add further spice to the event, the final event had a chasing start!

FVO Scottish Score Championships - Dumyat

Forth Valley Orienteers organised this years Scottish Score Championships on Dumyat. I ran the M40-70 course which had 26 controls and a time limit of 1 hour, afterwhich penaly points are deducted. I got 21 controls and 420 points in 60.51, but was deducted 9 points for being late back and so scored 411 points.

This was Forth Valley Orienteers first night race of the autumn and with a newly extended map, a quality field and great planning (by Jon Cross), it was an event I wasn't going to miss - even though I had a cold. I ran the Long course which was 5.6k with 26 controls and which was won by Mark Nixon in 35 minutes.

Today's ESOC Long O took place in the Scottish Borders was very tough underfoot. I ran the Short course which was 10.6k with 500m of climb and 5 controls. Afterwards, we went into Edinburgh for the Meadows Festival which, with it's music and stalls, provided a nice contrast to running in the hills.

Lothian Running Club - Glas Tulaichean uphill race

The Glas Tulaichean uphill race was the first hill race I have done for some time and is the first time I have ever done an uphill only race - 7.2k with 670m of climb. The race was organised by Lothian Running Club, with Martin Hyman playing a key role, and despite a disappointingly small entry was great, if tough, fun to participate in! The race winner, in a time of 37:06, was Paul Faulkner of Carnethy Hill Running Club. Special mention must be made of the post-race catering which was delicious and of the prize giving which saw every participant receive a prize!

It's always good to run in new orienteering areas and Drummond Castle and Torlum was no exception. Like yesterday, the forest was tough going, especially so following last Monday's storm; but it again provided a good technical challenge, with spectator interest at the control to the south of the pond. I ran third leg for FVO Facetious (Ben Stansfield was first off, with Jason Inman on second leg) on the Handicap 6+ course, with my leg being 4.9k with 210m of climb and 21 controls.

I've run in the south west part of todays area (Dalton) once before - in 1976 on a 2 coloured (black and brown) map made by Mel Wilkinson. My recollection was of a tough and technical area and today, 35 years later, I've been reminded how tough and technical it is!

Tonight's Night Race was planned by Ross McLennan, who used his garden for control 4/7/10. The Long course was 4.3k with 17 controls and despite a mass start, legs with lots of route choice, coupled with gaffling; meant that runners were often on their own. After 10, I found myself in a pack with 3 other runners, with the lead changing repeatedly as runners took different routes. It was such an absorbing race that I only became aware of the heavy rain, that had apparently been falling throughout the race, once I'd finished!

ESOC Sprint O - Corstorphine Hill and Lauriston Castle

The ESOC Sprint O is a Prologue followed by a Chase, both of which were excellently planned by Crawford Lindsay.

The Prologue took place at Corstorphine Hill and was 2.2k with 85m of climb and 12 controls. Marcus Pinker did the fastest time of 12.39.

The Chase took place at Lauriston Castle and was 2.3k with 50m of climb and 29 controls. Gaffling worked really well to separate runners. Marcus was passed by Chris Galloway, but a mispunch by Chris meant that Marcus was victorious, just holding off Will Hensman who recorded the fastest time in the Chase. I also mispunched (number 20) and completely overlooked, and so didn't visit, number 12.

This was the second race of the EUOC Big Weekend and incorporated a South of Scotland Orienteering League event and the East of Scotland Championships. I ran the Brown (longest) course which was 7.9k with 490m of climb and 27 controls, and which was won by Murray Strain in a very impressive 48.29.

This was STAG's 12th Glasgow Parks Championships - which involves 3 races in 1 day! The location of the first Park was only revealed at the end of last week, with the venue for the second race disclosed after the first event and the venue for the final race, revealed after the second event. To add further spice to the Championships, the final event had a chasing start!

The TAY Christmas Score is always good fun - orienteering followed by a social with food! This years event took place at Crieff, with the orienteering taking place on the snow covered Knock - the hill above the town, followed by post race ginger wine (far better than water!) and lunch at the Glenturret Distillery. I got all except one control, but took 2 minutes more than the time allowed (60 minutes) so incurred some penalty points! I visited the controls in the following order: 171, 173, 174, 172, 177, 178, 176, 175, 181, 185, 184, 182, 186, 188, 187, 180, 194, 193, 192, 189, 190, 179, 183 and 170. Will Hensman continued his recent good form by winning the event.

This was FVO's first Night Event of the winter and took place on Dumyat - a hill at the west end of the Ochil Hills. Fraser Purves planned a Long course which was 6.1k with 23 controls. A mass start with gaffling, meant there was lots of head to head racing, with runners from the 2 different gaffles coming together at 17, making for an exciting finish. Roger Goddard and Will Hensman were the first runners home, with me third, just in front of Steve Nicholson.

This years 11 person relay was organised by Grampian Orienteers and took place at the National Trust for Scotland's Crathes Estate, to the west of Aberdeen. I ran first leg (Short Green which was 3.3k with 105m of climb and 13 controls) and handed over to 3 team mates, who handed over to 3 more runners who, in turn, handed over to 3 more runners, before a single, last leg runner went out. Purple Thistle events adopt a 'barebones' approach and provide quality orienteering in great areas. This years event was held at Balmacara in the West Highlands and gave very tough and technical orienteering and, given the great weather, fantastic views of the Isle of Skye and surrounding hills and lochs.

I last orienteered in Finland over 30 years ago - as part of the British team at the World Students at Jyvaskyla in 1978 and as part of the British squad preparing for the World Championships at Tampere in 1979.

This time I was back as part of Skotlanti 50 - a band of over 50 year old Scottish orienteers who fancied running in Jukola 2010 - the biggest orienteering relay in the World and a race everybody should do before they die! The 7 man team comprised of (in leg order): myself, Roger Coombs, Steve Barrett, Rob Bloor, Graham McIntyre, Donald Petrie and John Tullie.

First leg of Jukola, with 1535 other runners, was like nothing else I've ever experienced, with my main goals being to hold onto the map and not get trampled! My course was 9.8k with 20 controls, and was relentlessly tough and technical. I took 114 minutes, having made mistakes at 3, 12 and 14, and came back in 617th position. The team put together a solid set of runs and eventually finished in 408th.

The weather this weekend was wonderful and it was difficult to decide what to do. I was keen on going skiing at Cairngorm, but Hazel wanted to go orienteering and so, overruled, we drove to Deeside for MAROC's Local event at Bogendreip - an area I've run on a few times before and which we felt would be good preparation for next weekends Scottish Championships. Arnaskie, near Oban, was the venue for the second (of three!) selection race for this years World Championships. Marsela McLeod planned testing and varied middle distance courses which started in open woodland, then had a few controls in a plantation with low visibility, before finishing in a tricky, bushy(rhododendrons) area. I ran the Mens course which was 5.4k with 255m of climb and 25 controls. Scott Fraser won the Mens course from Graham Gristwood and Grace Crane won the Womens course from Helen Palmer.

INT organised this years Scottish Sprint Championships at Edinburgh Universitiy's King's Buildings. I ran Course 1 (for M16-50) which was 2.7k with 22 controls. I disqualified myself after realising (only at the finish!) that I'd crossed a wall that it was forbidden to cross going to 17.
