This was my second visit to Birkett Common and Wharton Fell - the first being in the summer of 2002 for the Lakes 5 Day. The weather today was far from summery, being cool and windy, with squally showers. Despite that, the area is a pleasant place to orienteer and with a well planned course, made for an enjoyable event.
I ran the Brown (longest) course which was 8.7k with 275m of climb and 18 controls, and which took me 62:46.

It was open hill, so the visibility was good; which meant it was fairly easy to follow a compass bearing. My only time loss was at number 17, when I started looking for the control too early. Was disappointed to be so long behind the winner - obviously wasn't running as hard and fast as I thought I was!
Hello Martin!
I'm a 18 year old orienteerer from Gothenburg i Sweden.
Me and my friends are planning to visit the Scottish Highlands next summer and we wonder if we are allowed to run everywhere and if there is any possibility that we can get hold of a orienteering map or something, so we don't get lost on our training session.
Please respond at Maccanhansson@gmail.com
Kind regards

Hi Martin
Great Blog, I would like to follow it can you add the follower gadget so I can get a feed.
PS do you get any trouble from any clubs about displaying maps I would like to do the same. I think they would get a bit funny down hear in the south!!
cheers

Hi Mark,
I didn't know the follower gadget existed until you mentioned it, but have now found it.
I haven't had any objections to my posting maps. I suppose one reason for this might be that in Scotland, the Land Reform Act gives a right of responsible access to most land, so there aren't the trespassing concerns that might exist further south.
